CHEVIGNÉ, Louis, comte de
Tales from Reims. Drawings by E. Meissonier. Eighth edition Paris, printing house Claye for Librairie de l'Académie des Bibliophiles, 1878. Large volume in-8 (243 x 157 mm) of 2 ff.n.ch., 308 pp. 1 vignette on the title and 57 vignettes in the text. Green morocco, gilt filleting, spine ribbed and decorated, interior roulette, gilt edges (Cannape and Corriez). Vicaire, II, 390; Talvart-Palce, III, 103:H. Eighth edition of this famous collection. Regularly enlarged, it is divided into two large chapters, the first of which is composed of 34 tales, the second of which contains 22 and ends with an epilogue. The first 34 are illustrated after Meissonnier, the next 22 and the epilogue are illustrated after Foulquier. The illustration is completed by a vignette on the title. An exceptional copy which contains a complete suite of all the fumés - test prints - made for each of the illustrations. The series is completed by 5 fumés of rejected plates (notably for chapter 16 of the first part, and for chapters 2, 13, 16, 18 and 19 of the second part) bringing the number of fumés to 64. An autograph note by Jules Brivois at the end of this copy indicates that this suite of fumés would have been printed in only 6 copies. Binding slightly damaged. Provenance: Jules Brivois (note, sold before 1914, this copy does not appear in the 1922 sale) - André Villet (ex-libris).
