DUGUET, Jacques-Joseph, abbé
Institution of a Prince: or Treatise on the Qualities, Virtues and Duties of a Sovereign. First [-fourth] part. Leiden, Jean & Herman Verbeek, 1739. 4 volumes in-12 (156 x 95 mm) of 19 ff.n.ch., 368 pp. for volume I ; 9 ff.n.ch., 368 pp. for volume II ; 13 ff.n.ch., 659 pp. for volume III ; 13 ff.n.ch. (last blank), 557 pp. for volume IV. Brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition in this format, published the same year as the original quarto edition (London, by Jean Nourse). This treatise on the education of a prince is the work of one of the most endearing characters of the Jansenist party; Saint-Simon speaks at length of the discussions he had with him at the Abbey of La Trappe. This edition is enriched with a long biographical introduction. His "Institution d'un prince", published posthumously, was written for the Duke of Savoy. Minor damage to two headpieces, otherwise a very good copy.
