[DU HAUTCHAMP]
Histoire du système des finances sous la minorité de Louis XV, pendant les années 1719 et 1720, précédée d'un abrégé de la vie du Duc Régent et du Sieur Law. The Hague, Pierre de Hondt, 1739. 6 volumes in 3 in-12 (160 x 95 mm) of 1 f.n.c., 204 pp. for volume I; 1 f.n.c., 312 pp. for volume II; 1 f.n.c., 208 pp. for volume III, 208 pp. for volume III ; 1 f.n.c., 286 pp. for volume IV ; 7 f.n.c., 294 pp. for volume V ; 9 f.n.c., 246 pp. for volume VI. Speckled calf, spine decorated, red edges (period binding). INED, 1953; missing from Goldsmiths, Kress and Einaudi. First edition. The principal contemporary historian of John Law's operations, Du Hautchamp here relates the detailed history of Law's system and gives a biography of the financier "whose intentions were good, but who... erred when he imagined he could execute in one year what required at least ten". The last two volumes contain an exhaustive list of the judgments published on John Law's system. "It is a reasoned inventory of all the documents relating to Law's system. This book is written with partiality, and under the influence of the discontents which followed the bankruptcy; but it is one of the most interesting documents of the time" (Coquelin-Guillaumin). Minor wear, corners slightly dulled, stain on one cover.
