[DULAURENS, Henri-Joseph]
Le Compère Matthieu, or The Bigarrures of the Human Mind. London, at the company's expense, 1772. 3 volumes in-12 (172 x 105 mm) of 3 ff.n.ch., 320 pp. for volume I ; 2 ff.n.ch. 338 pp. for volume II ; 2 ff.n.ch., 380 pp. for volume III. Marbled calf, spine with ornamented nerves, title-piece in red and green morocco respectively, red edges (period binding). See INED, 1560 (ed. London 1777) and Brunet, II, 196 (erroneously announces an edition of 1766). Rare first edition, with the first volume bearing the erroneous date of 1732 on the title, the other two volumes without mention of edition (there is a new edition of 1772, also printed in London, with various ornaments on the titles). Licentious, "philosophical, and satirical novel, of rather Voltairian inspiration, although Dulaurens remains quite faithful to the spirit of Christianity" (INED). Nice copy.
