De gli Elementi d'Euclid libri quindici. Con gli scholii antichi. Tradotti prima in lingua latina da M. Federico Commandino da Urbino, & con commentarii illustrati. Urbino, printed by Domenico Frisolino, 1575. In-folio (320 x 210 mm) of 8 ff.n.ch., 278 ff.ch. Speckled basane, spine with ornamented nerves, spotted edges (17th century binding). Riccardi, I, 363-364; Thomas-Stanford, 42; DSB, III, 363-365. First edition of the Italian translation by Commandino (1509-1575), who was one of the leading mathematicians to contribute to the revival of this science in the 16th century. His editions of Euclid were used as models for many later editions ("His editions of Euclid were made use of by subsequent editors for centuries" Thomas-Stanford, p. 10). This edition is one of the four works printed in the house of Commandino, which had obtained ducal permission for the installation of a private press. Spellings, internally fresh apart from occasional foxing. Provenance: seventeenth-century bookplate with the motto 'Sola virtus vera nobilitas'.
