[GODEFROY, Jacques]
Le Mercure jésuite : ou Recueil des pièces, concernant le progrès des jésuites, leurs escrits, & differents : depuis l'an 1620 jusqu'à l'année 1626. Second edition. Geneva, Pierre Aubert, 1631. 2 parts in a large volume in-8 (168 x 100 mm) of 20 ff.n.ch., 938 pp., 4 ff.n.ch., 344 pp. soft vellum, handwritten title on spine (contemporary binding). Second and best edition of this famous work, edited by Jacques Godefroy in Geneva. Despite the indication on the title the details contained in this work go back to the year 1540 and not only to 1620. Volume II is occupied by the speech of Juan de Mariana on the defects of the Jesuit government (text in Spanish followed by the translation). "The editor took care to inform the reader of the lively friction between the Catholics of France, the supporters of the cardinal and the Jesuits, by inserting among the most piquant pieces of the collection extracts of two anonymous libels published in autumn 1625" (Mario Turchetti, Jacques Godefroy and the Jesuit Mercury). Endpapers renewed, last leaf missing a few letters at the top of the page.
