[HOLBACH]
A Treatise on the Three I[mposter]. Translated from the Latin by J.H.B.L.H. Frankfurt am Main, [ca. 1770]. In-8 (199 x 123 mm). Manuscript on paper, title and 1623 pp, brown ink. Marbled calf, smooth spine decorated, red edges (contemporary binding). See Vercruysse, p. 44-45. Anonymous manuscript of this treatise sometimes attributed to the baron d'Holbach, attribution refused by Vercruysse. "It has been proved for a long time that the famous Treaty of the three impostors often republished in the XVIIIth century has nothing in common with the famous De tribus impostoribus of more ancient origin. An examination of the text shows that it is a reworking of a famous text that circulated in manuscript under the different title of Spirit of Spinoza... The Treatise can in no way be attributed to Holbach" (Vercruysse). Very nice manuscript, decorated with a beautiful title in a pen and ink frame, and 6 vignettes and 6 initials finely drawn and coloured at the time. A fine copy.
