Amsterdam, Étienne Roger, 1719. 5 volumes in-12 (152 x 91 mm) with an engraved frontispiece portrait, LXXXVI, 477 pp. 6 ff.n.ch., 24 engraved plates for volume I; XLIV, 412 pp. 9 ff.n.ch., 8 engraved plates for volume II; VII, 416 pp, 8 ff.n.c., 8 engraved plates for volume III ; IX, 408 pp. 9 ff.n.c., 8 engraved plates for volume IV ; engraved frontispiece, 1 f.n.c. of title, 438 pp. 13 ff.n.c., 9 engraved plates (of which 3 folding) for the Supplement. Red morocco, triple gilt fillet, spine ribbed and decorated, green morocco title and gilt headband, gilt edges (period binding). Brunet, IV, 1233. First complete edition, containing the important Supplement which is often missing. Edition dedicated to King George V with a vignette bearing his coat of arms at the beginning of the first four volumes. Born in Caen in 1677, Constantin de Renneville left France for the Netherlands because of his Protestant convictions. Back in France, he was denounced for having written verses against Louis XIV and Philippe V, then imprisoned in the Bastille for eleven years until 1713. Released by Queen Anne of Great Britain, he went to England where he wrote his work which relates his imprisonment. Richly illustrated with 58 engraved plates (including the frontispiece), the fifth volume, published as a supplement, contains the history of the Goa inquisition by Dellon. Copy preserved in a decorative red morocco binding of the period. Some leaves browned; title of the fourth volume formerly lined.
