SAVARON, Jean, sieur de Villars
Traicté de l'espée françoise. [And:] Traicté contre les duels. With the edict of Philippe le Bel of the year MCCCVI. Paris, Adrian Perier, 1610. 2 works in 1 volume in-12 (159 x 95 mm) of 56 pp. for Épée ; 8 ff.n.ch., 125 pp. for Duel. Marbled calf, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges (18th century binding). Brunet, V, 153. Collection of two original editions, published in the year of the death of Henri IV. Descendant of a line of Catholic jurists from Auvergne, Jean Savaron (1566-1621) himself held important legal and administrative positions. A recognized scholar of his time, his role in the States General of 1614 made him a political author of circumstance. Set in the context of the dramatic birth of absolute monarchy, Jean Savaron's propagandist work is an exemplary example, both in its method and in its aims, of the current of publicists who, at the beginning of the 17th century, were committed to defending the cause of royal power. (See : Sabrina Michel, Un propagandiste au pouvoir royal au début du XVIIème siècle). The Traicté de l'épée praises the sword and its usefulness, mainly in the wars of religion. The Traite sur les duels is a commentary on the edict of Fontainebleau of June 1609 authorizing the practice of duelling except for reasons of passion or love. The Traicté de l'épée is a little short of margins with a few leaves touched at the head margin by the binder's knife.
