First complete edition in French of this important work for the history of classical art. "The first 2 volumes first appeared in 1793, under the title of Oeuvres de Winckelmann" (Brunet). Copy on laid paper, complete with its 65 plates and required frontispieces. Among the plates is a representation of the sculpture of Laocoon. The illustration is completed by numerous vignettes reproducing works of antiquity. "With the publication of his masterpiece, the History of the Art of the Ancients, his fame had become widespread. This was indeed the first work in the German language to achieve universal acclaim. Winkelmann had drawn attention for the first time to the importance of Greek ideals for the modern world, and, with his unique acquaintance with the surviving examples of classical art, amplified by wide and specialized reading, his authority was unquestioned. A fine copy, well preserved.
