SALMON, Jean, dit SALMON MACRIN
Odarum Libri tres ad P. Castellanum Pontif. Matisconum. Io. Bellaii Cardinalis amplissimi Poemata aliquot elegantissima ad eundem Matisconum Pontificem. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1546. In-8 (170 x 102 mm) of 159 pp.ch. Calf, spine ribbed, cold decoration on the boards composed of a double frame and a rhombus with central fleuron (period binding). Renouard, 68: 20; Jammes, 66; Oberlé, 214; Cioranesco, 20331. First edition. Neolatin poet Jean Salmon Macrin (1490-1557) studied in Paris under Lefèvre d'Étaples. Valet of François I, he had for protector Guillaume and Jean Du Bellay and was in continuous relation with the humanists and poets of his time. It is with his Latin odes that Salmon Macrin gave the best of his poems. They are dedicated to Pierre Duchatel, bishop of Macon and patron of letters, whom Salmon calls his patron. The second part of the volume contains the Latin poems of Cardinal Du Bellay, which have only been collected in the present edition. They occupy pages 83-157 and are followed by an epistle by Michel de l'Hospital to Cardinal Du Bellay. A copy in a contemporary binding, the spine of which has been remounted in the past; on this occasion, a plate bound at the end of the volume has probably been removed and replaced by a wooden wedge, carefully dressed and stained.
