CERVANTES (Miguel de). The ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha. Translated and annotated by Louis Viardot, vignettes by Tony Johannot. Paris, Dubochet et Cie, 1836-37. Two large volumes in-8, contemporary binding in full blue morocco with long grain, important rocaille gilt decoration on the boards and on the spines, gilt edges (G.Wagner). First edition. Two frontispieces printed on chine, two ornate faux-titles and some 800 woodcut vignettes in the text the text after Tony Johannot. One of the most important books of the artist and the most richly illustrated of the time, with the Molière by the same Johannot. Superb decorated binding of the period signed by Wagner, very fresh. Very rare in this condition. The copy seems to have been washed and put back in its binding. From the libraries of Alfred Clériceau, Charles Hayoit and Raoul Simonson, with their bookplates.
