Yan Pei Ming Red in its raw state. This masterful and unpublished work was acquired from the artist in his studio. It has retained the raw side of creation that offers itself to the first glance, a bare exposure that reveals all its splendor. It stands before you, majestic. Yan Pei-Ming has always been fascinated by pontifical figures and their representation of authority. Here, there is no room for wandering, the character scans us, judges us with his intense and fixed gaze, his hands joined in the center of the work stabilize the composition and the viewer, with a symbolic and spatial gravity. Faced with this canvas, the gaze is lost in an intense red applied with sharp brushstrokes depositing a vigorous paint. He likes to use a monochromatic palette of reds and whites, which focuses us on the subject when the composition with its blurred contours leaves room for our imagination. This ambivalence disturbs and fascinates us. There is a hypnotic play of distance, the vision and the subject become blurred if we try to tame it up close, while they become precise, intense and expressive when the distance is imposed. "I am not interested in the representation of reality, because for me, there is no true reality or absolute reality. A priori, there is no lie either. With the portrait, I only deliver a possibility, a hypothesis. But I believe that painting has always been a perfect lie."
