BARNEY, Natalie Clifford.
Nouvelles Pensées de l'Amazone. Paris, Mercure de France, 1939. In-12 [182 x 118] of 214 pp, (1) f. : green half-basin, spine ribbed and decorated, head speckled, untrimmed, cover preserved (binding of the time). First edition. Precious copy of Marie Laurencin (1883-1956), enriched with a beautiful autograph sending signed on the false-title : to Marie Laurencin // under her charm and under // the charm of her "carnet des // nuits" - that I have just read // to console myself a little // not to see her today // attentive to her beautiful fluidity // her ally the amazon // July 4 /39 Paris. // ... "One looks for the journeys"... // my next one will be towards your // hanging garden - V erses the 6 // hours - will you? For we must match the days and the hours to be able to take away the impression that we have met - your admiration. Marie Laurencin was a regular visitor to Natalie Clifford Barney's literary salon, with whom she kept up a rich correspondence. The Carnet des nuits to which Barney refers is a largely autobiographical account in which the artist recorded her memories of her youth. In 1939, when Natalie Barney sent her New Thoughts from the Amazon, the Notebook had not yet been published: she will undoubtedly have read the manuscript, proof of the links between the two women. The copy then belonged to Simone de Caillavet (1894-1968), wife of André Maurois. It bears this second autograph sending: to Madame Simone Maurois, // who brings me more memories // than I can give her... // Attentive to the revelations // completing those of friendship. // Natalie Clifford Barney // Paris 23 May / 58. Back rubbed and faded. Part of the cover of the sale catalog of Marie Laurencin's library has been glued on the first white guard. Provenance: Marie Laurencin (sale 29 October 1956, n° 23) - Simone André-Maurois, with bookplate designed by Henri Mondor and engraved by J. Jacquin.
