BARRES, Maurice.
Gréco ou le Secret de Tolède. Paris, Émile-Paul frères, 1912. 2 sets of proofs in one volume in-12 [197 x 136] : red jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, untrimmed, red morocco framed inside, bordered by a gilt fillet, untrimmed (Huser). MEETING OF TWO COMPLETE SETS OF CORRECTED PROOFS. They include a large number of typographical or orthographical corrections, as well as indications of page layouts, in pencil, black ink and red ink. They are in the hand of the proofreader, but there are also autograph notes (pages 4, 61, 69 and 187 in the first proofs and pages 1, 5, 29, 57, 133, 171 and 177 in the second). The second set of proofs is older. One finds these indications: "proofs seen by the corrector" and, in the author's hand: "reviewed by Maurice Barrès who did not find the dedication. M. B." The dedication was indeed added, printed on strong wove paper. Autograph note bound at the head, dated November 6, 1911, on two cards with the letterhead of the Chamber of Deputies: "On the back, or opposite the title, you can indicate that these are complete works that will appear in new editions. [...] For the rest, I leave it to you, at least Emile Paul. Please do not let your proofreader change my punctuation. There is no rule. It is a matter of mood." This famous essay dedicated by Barrès to Robert de Montesquiou. It first appeared in the Revue bleue in 1909, then in 1911 in a collective illustrated volume; the proofs belong to the first separate edition. The work, which gave rise to a renewed interest in El Greco's art, was considered by Proust - who mentions it several times in his correspondence - to be one of Maurice Barrès' best books.
