BENJAMIN, Walter.
Ursprung des deutschen Trauerspiels. Berlin, Ernst Rowohlt Verlag, 1928. In-8 [220 x 142] of 257 pp. and (1) f. : black cloth boards, in printed dust jacket. First edition of this canonical essay. It is printed in gothic characters according to the author's wish. The Origin of German Baroque Drama is considered the most important work that Walter Benjamin was able to complete. After carrying it for more than ten years, the University of Frankfurt refused to accept it as a doctoral dissertation on the grounds that it did not fall specifically within any of the academic disciplines. As a result, he was never invited to teach. Untraceable, the first edition has just been published in facsimile. A well-preserved copy, complete with the printed dust jacket. Ex-libris Dr. Fritz Kocher-Benzing.
