CLAUDEL, Paul.
The Hostage. Drama. Paris, Nouvelle Revue française, [1911]. In-8 [255 x 164] of 205 pp, (1) f. : tan calf, cold flowers and foliage in the upper inner corner of each cover, spine ribbed and decorated with cold flowers, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (René Kieffer). First edition. Drama first performed on June 6, 1914 by the Théâtre de l'OEuvre. ONE OF THE 20 COPIES OF THE SPECIAL EDITION ON ARCHES VELLUM PAPER FOR THE COMPANY "LES XX", SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AT THE JUSTIFICATION (N° 3). Beautiful copy, bound by the Kieffer workshops, enriched with Claudel's autograph manuscript of five pages in-4, proposing a variant of the last two scenes. Specially written for the performance of the play at the Malakoff theater in 1914, it was reproduced in Le Figaro of June 8 of the same year: "We are happy to offer to our readers the most dramatic scene of the Hostage, by M. Paul Claudel, whose theater of 'l'OEuvre' is currently giving, at the Malakoff theater, performances which have a brilliant success. This scene is unpublished. It ends the drama. Sygne de Coûfontaine has just been struck to death by a bullet that her brother, Georges de Coûfontaine, mortally wounded on his side, intended for Turelure, the husband she accepted out of a Christian spirit of sacrifice." The manuscript presents some corrections.
