The Old Man on Mount Omi. Butterflies and Butterfly Shadows by Audrey Parr. [Paris, Le Livre, 1927.] In-16 [162 x 128] of (58) ff. the first 4 and the last 2 white : mordant and black calfskin assembled, including gold and silver lamé and threaded borders at the junction of the leathers, first board including on the black calf pieces the title, author's name and date inscribed in gold and silver lamé and threaded capitals, and in the center a rectangle painted under glass surrounded by thin braided leather laces, smooth spine, gilt and black calf frame inside, decorated with a double gilt fillet, painted linings and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, spine folder and flap bands of gilt calf, case (Canape et Corriez - Louise-Denise Germain 1930). First edition. It was printed at 230 copies on ivoirine, a very fragile transparent paper (n° 7). The delicate illustration includes 31 butterflies reproduced in white gouache by Jean Saudé after Audrey Parr's original drawings: Le Vieillard sur le Mont Omi is Paul Claudel's last collaboration with Andrey Parr (Nantet, Paul Claudel et Audrey Parr, le poète et la fée, 2015, p. 25). Magistral decorated binding, commissioned by Louis Barthou (1862-1934). "L.-D. Germain did not practice much in the way of inlays of atypical materials, whose fashion, very popular with some collectors, had been launched at the end of the 19th century. Apart from the one presented here, there is only one binding with a mother-of-pearl piece, one with a polished stone and one with a medal for a commissioned piece. The binding presented here has also the particularity to join two skins in an original device with a braided heart, assembled by silver threads and gold and silver staples" (Fabienne Le Bars). VERY NICE COPY. Provenance: Louis Barthou, with bookplate (cat. III, 1936, n° 1251). Rubbing and cracking to the back of the folder. Exhibition : Paris, Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, 2017, n° 69.
