The Black Faces. Preface by Paul Adam. Paris, E. Sansot & Cie, 1907. In-4 [323 x 246] of 207 pp, (3) ff. the first blank, 15 plates : grey, green and garnet shaded brown calf, partially hammered, succession of horizontal fillets lamé in gold and silver on the boards, smooth spine bearing the artist's name and the title of the book in cold letters and lamé in gold and silver, framed in shaded brown calf, decorated with a gilt fillet, gilt squares and two double wavy fillets in cold, lining and endpapers of brown moiré silk decorated with embroidered motifs of mauve and gilt threads, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine kept in one piece (Louise-Denise Germain, Chambolle-Duru). First edition. It is illustrated with compositions by Steinlen comprising 16 lithographs, including one on the cover and 15 hors texte, and 40 woodcuts. One of the 20 copies on Arches vellum printed especially for the Société les XX, signed by the author and the artist (n° XII). This one includes the cover on japanese paper in two states and the fifteen plates in four states pasted on japanese paper, two in bistre and two in black. Remarkable binding by Louise-Denise Germain executed by Chambolle-Duru. The lining and endpapers in brown moire embroidered with mauve flowers are of the most beautiful effect. Hinges cracked. Transfers of the first plates to the facing leaves, foxing in the margins of some rare plates. Provenance: Gabriel Thomas, with bookplate engraved and signed by Edgard Chahine, printed full page on japon. G. Thomas was with Louis Barthou one of the two patrons of Louise-Denise Germain.
