GIDE, André.
The Notebooks of André Walter. Posthumous work. Paris, Perrin et Cie, 1891. In-12 [182 x 117] of (2) ff. 279 pp. brown jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, brown morocco lining with gilt fillet, brown moiré silk endpapers, gilt edges, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (P.L. Martin). First edition, printed in a small number. Printed at the author's expense and in an almost confidential way, like all the books to come until La Porte étroite, it has been thrown away. The notice signed P.C., that is Pierre Chrysis, alias Pierre Louÿs, will be deleted later. The beginnings of a man of letters. They were greeted by Huysmans, Barrès, Mallarmé, Maeterlinck and Verhaeren. The Notebooks had been for Gide a reflection on the novel as much as a critical contribution to the then triumphant symbolism. Not without a high ambition, confessed to Paul Valéry: "Mallarmé for the poetry, Maeterlinck for the drama - and although I feel a bit gringy with them, I add Me for the novel" (Letter of January 26, 1891). From this first edition only the copies intended for the press service have survived, which had thus escaped the pillaging. Autograph letter signed: to Mr. Harry Alljs [sic] // homage from the author // André Gide American painter linked to the impressionist movement, Harry Allis (1870-1938) lived in France a good part of his life. A very fine copy in a lined binding by Pierre-Lucien Martin.
