GIDE, André.
Le Traité du Narcisse (Theory of the symbol). Paris, Librairie de l'Art indépendant, 1892. Small in-8 [191 x 148] of 28 pp, (2) ff : blue morocco, boards decorated with a frame made of two gilt fillets and a red morocco listel bordered with a gilt fillet, criss-crossing at the corners, ribbed spine decorated in the same way, magenta box lining bordered with a gilt fillet, same box endpapers, double blue paper endpapers, gilt edges, cover and spine preserved (Semet et Plumelle). First edition in bookshop : limited edition of 80 copies. It was preceded by an edition out of trade in a very small number. One of the 10 first copies on Japan paper. Brief treatise, dedicated to Paul Valéry: second work of André Gide, the first published under his name. Copy enriched with a beautiful autograph letter signed twice, addressed to Pierre Louÿs. It was written in March 1892 in Munich, where André Gide was staying with Mrs. Steidl. The writer had just received the last issue of La Conque. "This good Mr. Gallois has been kind enough to send me your play, which has now been published. Here, so far from you, from you, it is precious and cherished. It is at the same time, strangely, excellent verses and detestable French, - and the one really seems to be because of the other. But I definitely like it a lot. Thank you very much. Valery writes me that this issue is amazing; I haven't seen it. My mother who received it, after reading my verses, thought it unnecessary to send me this bad literature." (Autograph letter signed twice, 2 pages in-18.) A very nice copy in lined morocco by Semet et Plumelle. The prospectus of Gide's works published and to be published by the Librairie de l'Art Indépendant has been bound at the head. Provenance: Charles Hayoit, with bookplate (cat. IV, 2001, n° 716).
