GIDE, André.
La Tentative amoureuse. Paris, Librairie de l'Art indépendant, 1893. In-8 [193 x 148] of 43 pp. blue jansenist morocco, smooth spine, grey box lining and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, case (Loutrel). First edition : 162 copies were printed. One of the 12 first copies on Whatman paper (n° 9). A very nice copy in Loutrel's triple binding. The first proofs of the work, corrected by André Gide, are enclosed. The proofs are divided into four plates, three of which consist of eight folding sheets, printed on one side only, each stamped by the printer Paul Schmidt and bearing the partly handwritten indication: "1re épreuve le 8 7bre 1893." The fourth placard consists of a single sheet; it includes the end of the "Note de la Tentative amoureuse." The whole is composed of twenty-five printed sheets and one autograph sheet, the latter including the last three paragraphs of the text, before the "Note." Gide has written many indications of layout and has made several corrections and additions, notably at the end of the story. Leaves fragile at the folds and presenting several tears. The set is quite complete even if some pages have become detached from the boards. These proofs are preserved in sheets in a red half-maroquin case.
