GIDE, André.
Paludes. Paris, Librairie de l'Art indépendant, 1895. In-8 square [199 x 187] of (4) ff, 100 pp, (2) ff : dark blue jansenist morocco, ribbed spine, black morocco lining, black moiré silk endpapers, gilt edges, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (Huser) First edition. Limited edition of 409 copies: one of 12 on Arches vellum (n° 393). Copy numbered and initialed by the hand of André Gide "A.W." [André Walter]. [André Walter]. A precursor novel of the literary modernity. The novel or rather the sotie, to use the term that Gide liked, is a playful satire of Parisian circles and the oppressive climate of the symbolist circles in which Gide does not spare himself. The impact of Paludes was almost nil, but the vogue of the New Novel was to contribute to its literary fortune. This "novel of writing" was consecrated by Roland Barthes in Le Plaisir du texte, then placed by Nathalie Sarraute among the "five or six most important works of our time". Precious autograph letter signed on the false title: to Pierre Louÿs // André Gide // "Sit Tityrus Orpheus" // Virgil (Eglog. VIII, 55) André Gide and Pierre Louÿs met in 1887 on the benches of the Alsatian School in Paris. This year 1895 is that of the rupture which intervened precisely in March, the two young writers passing from the fusional friendship to the most total incomprehension. Despite the enmity, Gide was aware of the decisive importance in his life of such a meeting. A very nice copy in a lined binding by Huser.
