[GIONO, Jean, Lucien JACQUES et Joan SMITH traducteurs].
Moby Dick. Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Cahiers du Contadour, [1939]. In-8 [213 x 161] of 512 pp, (2) ff, XV pp, (2) ff, 2 plates : red half-maroquin with corners, spine gilt, untrimmed, cover and spine kept (Alix). Pre-original edition of the translation by Jean Giono, Lucien Jacques and Joan Smith of Herman Melville's famous novel : it is illustrated with a woodcut by Alexandre Noll at the head of the first chapter. The volume is composed of the meeting under a special cover of the four parts of the work extracted from the issues V to VIII of the Cahiers du Contadour published in 1938 and 1939. Each copy was numbered by hand by Lucien Jacques : this one is numbered 322 and contains two identical plates in black, on coated paper, representing a whale hunting scene. These two hors-texts accompanied the numbers V and VIII of the Cahiers du Contadour. Another plate depicting a whale hunting scene was in issue 7; it has not been preserved here. Nice copy, complete with the very rare trailer bearing: "Vient de paraître. Edition Pre-Original. Limited edition 600 copies."
