GIONO, Jean.
To greet Melville. Paris, Gallimard, [1941]. In-8 [191 x 122] of 184 pp, (1) blank : anthracite jansenist morocco, smooth spine, grey box lining, white box endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, anthracite morocco spine and cover bands folder, case (Alix). First edition. One of the first 7 numbered copies on China paper (n° V). Giono wrote this book after his release from prison: he initially thought of composing a preface to Moby Dick that he had just translated with Lucien Jacques and Joan Smith, but composed a real novel. A perfect copy in the triple binding of Mme Alix. Dictionnaire Giono, p. 751 : "Pour saluer Melville is a milestone in Giono's work. If not an academic preface, it is first of all [...] an irreplaceable sesame to access the hearts of Melville and Moby Dick. It is also, as far as the novelistic material and manner are concerned, a crest book between the pre-war novels and the Hussar Cycle or the Romantic Chronicles."
