GIONO, Jean.
The Great Paths. Novel. Paris, Gallimard, [1951]. In-8 [187 x 116] of 267 pp, (2) ff. the last blank : brown morocco, triple gilt fillet on the boards, ornate ribbed spine, blue morocco lining with gilt fillet, brown moiré silk endpapers, gilt edges, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (Huser). First edition of this novel of wandering. One of the first 23 copies on Hollande laid paper (n° XVIII). A very nice copy in morocco lined by Huser. It is enriched with two signed autograph letters addressed to Marcel Pagnol (2 1/4 pages in-8). On May 20th 1946, Jean Giono asks for the payment "of the last two installments", as he bought a "small villa in Nice" where he intends to stay "to be close to Aline who is doing an English degree". He also asks her to respond "about the Baker's Woman". On May 30th 1946, Giono was worried about his correspondent's silence and reiterated his request for payment in order to be able to honor his commitments. Pagnol made four films based on Giono's novels, which he admired, but his adaptations were not to the writer's liking, who was sorry about these "pagnolades". The adaptation of a famous episode from Jean le Bleu under the title of La Femme du boulanger (The Baker's Wife) was to give rise to a lawsuit between the two friends in 1941. Spine very slightly insolated.
