The Well of Loneliness with a commentary by Havelock Ellis. London, J. Cape, [1928]. In-8 [220 x 150] of 511 pp. Publisher's untrimmed hardback in printed dust jacket. First edition: first printing, with the error Whip instead of Whips page 50. One of the key novels of lesbian literature, which caused a scandal at the time: prosecuted for obscenity in the United Kingdom, it was sentenced to destruction. Known in France under the title Le Puits de Solitude, it is the work of the British poet and novelist Radcliffe Hall (1880-1943). It is the only one of her eight novels that openly addresses the theme of female homosexuality. (Aldrich & Wotherspoon, Who's Who in Gay and Lesbian History, p. 199: "A lesbian classic which has never been out of print and which has been translated into over a dozen languages.") Nice copy, complete with dust jacket.
