PHILIPPE, Charles-Louis.
Bubu of Montparnasse. Novel. Paris, Éditions de la Revue Blanche, 1901. In-12 (185 x 120) of 225 pp, (1) blank page : paperback, in a smooth spine folder of havana morocco decorated with P. L. Martin case. First edition. The most famous novel of Charles-Louis Philippe stages the thwarted love of a prostitute and a young man, according to the literary theme of the redemption of the courtesan, illustrated by Balzac, Dumas and Nana of Zola. "The reading of this book penetrated me with horror", will confess Léon Bloy. Precious autograph letter signed : To the master Emile Zola // homage of // Charles-Louis Philippe The letter brings together, two years before Zola's death, two "realist" writers, but contrary to a "naturalist" Zola, Charles-Louis Philippe, inspired by his own life, announces the populism. He says later about his elder: "M. Émile Zola lacked great vices to make a great work" (Chroniques du Canard sauvage). Small tears and soiling to the cover.
