PROUST, Marcel.
À l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs. Paris, Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française, [1918]. In-8 [192 x 125] of 443 pp, (2) ff : paperback, in a modern dark blue morocco spine folder and slipcase. First edition. Famous copy of Colette with this beautiful autograph letter signed on the first blank page: To Madame Colette // In tenderized // and amazed memory of // Mitsou // Marcel Proust The dedication expresses Proust's amazement at the reading of Mitsou, which he had already reported to Colette at the beginning of March 1919 in a famous letter. Proust's letter was therefore sent a few months after the publication of A l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs, which went to press on November 30, 1918. As for the copy of Mitsou dedicated by Colette, it was in the library of Pierre Berès (2006, n° 149). "The relations between Colette and Proust took a bad start, in life as in work. In life: with a 'missed' meeting, in 1894-1895, at the 'Wednesdays' of Mrs Arman of Caillavet. In the work: with the Claudines. Proust was twenty-three years old; Colette, twenty-one. [...] The Proust she met was the one who wrote Les Plaisirs et les jours: she attended with Willy a reading by the author himself of his portraits of painters, after which she wrote him [...] a rather awkward and embarrassed letter of compliments. [...] Colette and Proust lost sight of each other for many years (between 1897 and 1917-1918) and only saw each other again, very occasionally, at the end of the war. [...] The first text that Colette - in collaboration with Willy - wrote about Proust, without naming him, took the form of a portrait in Claudine en ménage, published in 1902. [...] In December 1917, Colette sent Proust Proust Les Heures longues (a collection of articles written from 1914 to 1917), for which he thanked her in his own way, full of quotations and praises" (Laurence Teyssandier, Regards de Colette sur Proust, June 2013). Nice copy in paperback. Some wear and soiling to the cover.
