The Devil in the Body. Roman. Paris, Bernard Grasset, 1923. In-8 [191 x 131] of 238 pp, (1) blank page : jansenist turquoise blue morocco, ribbed spine, gilt head, cover and spine preserved (Alix). First edition : One of the 6 copies out of commerce on Hollande paper, justified by the publisher : "plus 6 Holl. H.C. // Holl. HC. n° 6." Written at the age of eighteen, Le Diable au corps was published the same year that Raymond Radiguet died (1903-1923). The scandalous success and publicity orchestrated by Jean Cocteau and the publisher Bernard Grasset ensured a phenomenal success for this first novel, with 40,000 copies printed upon its release. Copy of the painter Jean Guérin (1903-1966), with an autograph signed on the false title: To Jean Guérin // in memory // of a beautiful evening // his friend // Raymond Radiguet // November 12, 1923 This precious letter was written exactly one month before the death of the author who was only 20 years old. Jean Guérin was the brother of the famous bibliophile Jacques Guérin. Spine faded.
