SARTRE, Jean-Paul.
Les Mots. Paris, Gallimard, [1964]. In-12 [185 x 117] of (4) ff. the first blank, 213 pp. and (1) f. : paperback, filled cover, modern folder and slipcase. First edition : copy of the press service. Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) wanted to make Les Mots a "farewell to literature". Hailed as a masterpiece, the autobiographical investigation does not let surprise under the pen of the critic of the intimate writing. Signed autograph letter on the title page: To Michelle // JP Sartre // 10.1.64 A relevant provenance for Michelle Vian (1920-2017), dedicatee of the autograph manuscript of Les Mots, now kept at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. (Sartre, BnF, 2005, p. 234-235.) Ex-wife of Boris Vian, whom she married in 1941, she became in 1949 the mistress of Jean-Paul Sartre. "She occupied a privileged place with him until his death in 1980, with a break between 1958 and 1961. [...] She made many trips with him and she played an essential role after May 68. Sartre entrusted her with many of his manuscripts. A great reader, she made many translations from English and wrote articles on cinema" (Michel Rybalka).
