SEGALEN, Victor.
Les Immémoriaux. Paris, Société du Mercure de France, 1907. In-18 [184 x 117] of 345 pp, (4) ff. the last one blank : rice paper boards à la Bradel, smooth spine, green morocco title page, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (period binding). First edition. Dedicated "To the Maoris of forgotten times", it was published under the pseudonym of Max-Anély. Long prose poem, the story reinvents with nostalgia the ancient Tahitian society and saves from oblivion the Polynesian myths. Precious copy of the author, with his autograph signature on the false-title dated January 31, 1914: it was bound in China, on his instructions. Indeed, on this date, Victor Segalen (1878-1919) was carrying out his second exploration mission in China, in company of Gilbert de Voisins and Jean Lartigue. He took this copy with him and had it bound on the spot, as well as others from his library, including the 1901 Noa Noa presented in the exhibition Victor Segalen, voyageur & visionnaire organized by the BNF in 1999 (nº 41 of the catalog). The copy is also enriched with an autograph note on an oblong in-8 sheet, relative to the work: Correct: [Le Parler ancien] 'For the Narrative has this power that all pain is lightened, that all weakness becomes strength in saying words. For words are gods'. Peking. 24 June 16. Letter from Yvonne. Reading of Le Parler Ancien to Andrée. The leaves of pages 99-100 and 101-102 have been switched. The copy is kept in a plexiglass window box revealing two floral paintings, the first red on an oval gilded background, the second gilded, both composed by A. Goy.
