First edition of the French translation by Georges Hugnet : it is illustrated with a portrait of the author in frontispiece, after a composition by Christian Bérard. Edition of 302 copies, of which only the first 100 contain the portrait by Christian Bérard and the signature of the author and the artist. One of the first 5 copies on japon impérial (n° 1), the one of Georges Hugnet. Remarkable autograph poetic letter signed on two pages, mostly in English, but beginning in French : To my dear George // Now and always // Fragile as a lettuce and robust // as a rose // And now and always // all mine in my English and // in my French // and in my heart [...] Always //. Gertrude Stein Between the mailing in French and her signature, Gertrude Stein painted the literary portrait in verse of Georges Hugnet that she will publish in Dix portraits (1930). A very well preserved copy.
