SVEVO, Italo.
Senilità. Romanzo. Trieste, Libreria Editrice Ettore Vram, 1898. In-8 [199 x 140] of 258 pp. with (1) blank page: paperback, in dark blue calf slipcase by De Stefanis (Milan). Very rare first edition, published at author's expense. The publication appeared in general indifference, summarized by the author himself in the preface to the second edition with a disillusioned formula: "It has received neither words of praise nor of blame." It was James Joyce, publicly declaring in 1927 that he enjoyed the book, who decided the success of the novel that other writers, such as Valery Larbaud, considered a masterpiece. Autograph letter signed with Italo Svevo's real name: Esimia signorina // Elda Gianelli // Con un saluto cordiale // Ettore Schmitz Originally from Trieste like the author, the poetess Elda Gianelli (1856-1921) was one of the first to write about Una Vita, the author's inaugural novel. Cover restored at the back and brought back.
