VALÉRY, Paul.
Introduction to the method of Leonardo da Vinci. Paris, Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française, [1919]. In-4 [213 x 163] of 100 pp, (2) ff. the first blank : dark green half-maroquin, gilt fillet, super libris on the first cover, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Yseux sr de Thierry-Simier). Second edition, partly original: it is increased with Notes and digressions. One of the 128 copies reprinted on Lafuma de Voiron paper (n° 34). A nice copy. A beautiful autograph letter signed by Paul Valéry, addressed on May 19, 1920 to Count René Philipon (1870-1936) is mounted at the head of the book: "I have looked with pleasure at this pencil of Redon a little younger than the Redon of 1900. It is around that time that I knew him. The following year, we lived side by side for a month in S. Georges de Didonne. We chatted delightfully in this rather bland air, in front of the enormous Gironde. We talked a lot about Huÿsmans, whom he no longer saw, and whom I saw very little since he tended to Ligugé." He adds further on: "If you have the opportunity to write to P.J. Toulet, I beg you to tell him that I am very upset to know that he is still suffering, and to the point of not being able to write; also tell him how much I enjoyed his novel. (3 pages in-12, envelope preserved). Provenance : René Philipon, with super libris of the castle of Vertcoeur on the first plate - P. Montoy, with ex-libris engraved by Andrada - André Chauveau, with ex-libris.
