WELLS, Herbert George.
Kipps. The story of a simple soul. London, Macmillan and Co, 1905. In-8 [191 x 128] of viii, 425 pp. Publisher's green cloth boards, first cover with gilt title and cold fruit decoration, smooth spine. First edition. Precious autograph letter signed on the title page: To Henry James // (who did not send me the // Golden Bowl) // H.G. Wells. Henry James' (1843-1916) short story, The Golden Bowl, had been published the year before (1904). Henry James was first won over by the talent of his younger brother, whom he admired to the utmost: "You are, for me, the most interesting 'literary man' of your generation - in fact, the only interesting one." Afterwards, dissensions and quarrels occurred to the point that Wells wrote a darkly ironic parody of James' writings (Boon, 1915). A nice copy in the publisher's hardback. Some wear and tear.
