WILDE, Oscar.
Salome, a Tragedy in one act. London, New York, Lohn Lane, 1912. In-8 [217 x 175] : publisher's green cloth boards, decorated on the first plate with a gilt floral plate, repeating an illustration from the book, smooth spine, gilt head. Piece written directly in French between 1891 and 1894 for Sarah Bernhardt. Performed for the first time at the Théâtre de l'OEuvre in 1896, the play was a great success in Paris, while the censor banned it in England for religious reasons. Salomé will know many editions, including this one printed on beautiful laid paper, illustrated with 16 black compositions out of text on japanese paper after Aubrey Beardsley's drawings. They are the same figures as those of the English original of 1894. A pleasant copy in the publisher's decorated boards.
