Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. New York, A New Direction Book, [1955]. In-8 [203 x 135] of xiii, 197 pp. 1 plate: publisher's salmon cloth, in illustrated dust jacket. First edition: it includes two different versions of Act III: the original one by Tennessee Williams, and the Broadway version including the changes made by Kazan. The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof premiered on Broadway in 1955 and was directed by Elia Kazan. Richard Brooks' 1958 Hays Code screen adaptation watered down the plot by removing all references to homosexuality. Autograph letter signed on the flyleaf: After all, // dear Cat // love // IO The diminutive "10" [for TENnessee] is used by the writer as a signature for mailings or messages addressed to his relatives. According to a pencil note, the message is addressed to the American actress Ruth Ford (1911-2009). The latter was to play in 1964 in the play by Tennesse Williams entitled The Milk Train doesn't stop here Anymore. Nice copy, complete with the dust jacket illustrated by Alvin Lustiq, bearing on the first flap the mention of "Third printing".
