ZOLA, Emile.
Letter addressed to Georges Hugo. Paris, May 22, 1885. Autograph letter signed "Emile Zola", 1 p. in-8 (207 x 134). remarkable letter of condolence addressed by Emile Zola on the day of Victor Hugo's death to his grandson Georges, then sixteen years old. You will perhaps know one day, Sir, that, even before Victor Hugo, I claimed the rights of criticism. And that is why, in the terrible pain in which you are, I want to tell you that all hearts have broken with yours. Victor Hugo was my youth, I remember what I owe him. There is no more possible discussion in such a day, all the hands must unite, all the French writers must rise to honor a master and to affirm the absolute triumph of the literary genius. [...] Letter partly published in Actes et paroles, volume IV.
