Joseph de MAISTRE (1753 – 1821)
About the Pope. By the author of the Considérations sur la France. Second edition increased and corrected by the author. Lyon, Rusand ; Paris, Librairie Ecclésiastique, 1821. Two volumes in-8 of XLII, 405 pp. ; (2) ff. 315 pp. bound in contemporary midnight blue glazed calf, double gilt fillet, bold and lean, and cold garland framing the boards, smooth spine decorated with a gilt cathedral, marbled edges. Second edition, partly original. Published shortly after the death of the author and given "on the corrected notebooks of his own hand" (Notice of the printer), it presents important reorganizations compared to the first one (1819). In this work of remarkable polemical vigor, De Maistre, convinced of the supremacy of the Church over the States, concludes with the necessity of the temporal power as a force of balance between the various monarchies of Europe. The work owed its impact in part to the consecutive plea of its author in favor of Italian independence. A superb copy in full contemporary glazed calf decorated on the spine with a fine gilt decoration with a cathedral. Slight light foxing on the margins of some leaves. Some traces of rubbing almost imperceptible on the boards. Joint : De l'Eglise gallicane dans son rapport avec le Souverain Pontife, pour servir de suite à l'ouvrage intitulé Du pape ; par l'auteur des Considérations sur la France. Lyon, Rusand ; Paris, Beaucé-Rusand, 1821. In-8 of VIII, 350 pp. half eggplant long-grained morocco with corners, smooth spine decorated with golden fillets, untrimmed, mute cover and spine with printed title label preserved (Lapersonne). First edition. Slight light spotting without damage to the text in the inner margin of a few leaves; small losses on the spine and on the second cover of the blanket.
