Arthur de GOBINEAU (1816 – 1882)
Essay on the inequality of human races. Paris, Didot ; Hanover, Rumpler, 1853 - 1855. Four volumes in-8 of (2) ff., XI, 492 pp., (1) f. ; (2) ff., 512 pp., (1) f. ; (2) ff., 423, (1) pp. ; (2) ff., 359, (1) pp. stapled, uncut, printed covers, folders, slipcases (A. Devauchelle) First edition of Gobineau's major and controversial work. "The unfortunate title of the work will later found the absurd and tenacious legend of a Gobineau father of racism. In fact, the work, based on the deceptive erudition of an autodidact, develops a dark philosophy of history: at the beginning of time, the human races each had their own faculties [...]. But in the course of the centuries, they have, by mixing their blood, lost their primitive qualities and are henceforth doomed to an irremediable decadence [...]. The Essay on the inequality of human races, a romantic vision, is an epic of despair" (In French in the text, 271). A very rare copy preserved in paperback and entirely uncut, very carefully washed, with its covers preserved in perfect condition.
