Jules BARBEY d’AUREVILLY (1808 – 1889)
Impossible love, Parisian chronicle. Dedicated to the Marquise Armance D... V... Paris, Delanchy, 1841. In-8 of (4) ff. 298 pp. and (1) f., midnight blue morocco, multiple frames of gilt fillets and cold-rolling on the boards, spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, interior return decorated with gilt fillets and rolls, gilt edges on witnesses, cover preserved, case (Semet et Plumelle). First edition, very rare, of the first novel published by Barbey d'Aurevilly. This youthful work begun in 1837, whose original title was Madame de Gesvres, is dedicated to its inspirer, the marquise Armance du Vallon, known as the Marchesa, who was perhaps his mistress. "I also began, in the order of the novel, with a chronicle of Parisian life. It was called L'amour impossible and it was Parisian in morals, language, refined and nauseating corruption, boredom and preciousness" (letter of May 19, 1873). Superb copy. Very skilful restorations to the covers, with a small portion of the frame of the second plate penciled to perfection.
