Jules BARBEY d’AUREVILLY (1808 – 1889)
L'ensorcelée. Paris, Cadot, 1855. Two volumes in-8 of (3) ff, 301 pp, (1) f. ; (2) ff, 332 pp, (1) f., burgundy chagrin, two cold-stamped fillets on the boards, inside framed with six gilt fillets, untrimmed, gilt head, covers preserved, slipcase (Aussourd). First edition of this novel describing a tragic passion against the background of the Chouannerie, considered by many as Barbey d'Aurevilly's masterpiece. Such was moreover the opinion of Baudelaire: "I have just reread this book which appeared to me even more masterpiece than the first time" (letter to Poulet-Malassis, November 13, 1858). "The work is of an exceptional resonance. The beauty of the landscapes, the almost physical impression of this moor, the dramatic accent of the story, everything here is ordered with mastery and a kind of secret enthusiasm " (Laffont-Bompiani. Dictionary of works). Following L'ensorcelée, the edition contains the short story entitled Ricochets de conversation, subtitled Le dessous de cartes d'une partie de whist, which will reappear in 1874 in Les diaboliques. A fine copy, with wide margins, with its covers preserved in perfect condition (tiny lack at the bottom of the second cover of volume II). Minor marginal tear restored in the white margin of one leaf. From the libraries of Pierre Duché and E.A.P. (Rouen, 1977) with ex-libris.
