Jules BARBEY d’AUREVILLY (1808 – 1889)
Memorandum. Caen, Hardel, 1856. In-16 square of (2) ff. 107 pp. stapled, blue printed cover, folder, case (Devauchelle). First edition, very rare, published by Trébutien at 36 copies not put in the market, this one on Hollande. Third of the five Memoranda written by Barbey d'Aurevilly, but the first published, called Memorandum of Caen. Written at the request of Trébutien, it is the diary of his stay in this city from September 28 to October 8, 1856, a stay that marked for him the reunion with his friend after twenty years of distance. Precious copy bearing on the false-title this autograph sending: intimate homage to Mr. Sainte-Beuve. J.B. d'A. Barbey had for a long time a deep admiration for the poet of Vie et poésies de Joseph Delorme, to the point of composing in 1834 an appendix to this work - the Fragment, which will be published only in 1912 (see n° 64) - in order to offer a copy thus personalized to a young woman, probably Louise Cautru Du Méril, his first love. He will turn away from him progressively, painting more and more critical portraits of him, in particular in Les OEuvres et les Hommes (1862): "M. Sainte-Beuve, the literary man, the professor (these three things are only one) has eaten away the Sainte-Beuve poet. Joseph Delorme would not have professed. The first originality is gone [...] Mr. Sainte-Beuve listened to books more than to life. He took for her the ornaments of the thought, and all the poetry which was in him in a higher degree of energy, all the time that he knew less, and consequently that he was more sincere, the poetry died, indigested of literature! " Cruelty of fate : after the defiant rupture between Barbey and Trébutien concerning the edition of the works of Maurice de Guérin, a project dear to the author of Les Diaboliques for a long time, it is with the help of Sainte-Beuve that the librarian from Normandy will fi nally edit the Reliquiae in 1861... An exceptional copy preserved in paperback, as issued, in superb condition.
