Jules BARBEY d’AUREVILLY (1808 – 1889)
Laocoon: A forgotten Rhythm translated into English verse from the French of J. Barbey d'Aurevilly by H. M. Carey. Caen, printed at the expense of B. Mancel, 1857. In-16 square of 16 pp. half red long-grained morocco with corners, spine with false nerves decorated with gilt motifs, untrimmed, grey cover preserved (Mercier, sr. de Cuzin). First edition of this poetic text by Barbey, given by Trébutien with the English translation opposite. Laoccon was supposed to precede a complete edition of Barbey's prose poems under the title Rhythmes oubliés. This edition will only be published in 1897 (n° 60). "The reason which sufficiently explains the isolated publication of Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly's Laocoon is the translation which accompanies it and which deserved to be brought to light. An Englishwoman of Norman consanguinity, Mrs. H.M. Carey de Rozel, has translated Laocoon (which is no longer a forgotten Rhythm) into the most poetic language of Europe..." (preface by Trebutien). A perfect copy, from the library of Paul Villebeuf with ex-libris and gilt figure on the corner of the first flyleaf.
