Jules BARBEY d’AUREVILLY (1808 – 1891)
The forty medallions of the Academy. Paris, Dentu, 1864. In-12 of (2) ff. 135 pp. half green morocco with corners, smooth spine decorated with fleurons and straight and dotted fillets, untrimmed, gilt head, cover and spine kept (Honnelaître). First edition. Portraits without concession of the forty members of the French Academy. Only the following are spared: Vigny, "dead yesterday", Hugo ("What motive could have decided him?"), Mérimée ("a most valiant romantic"), Lamartine (he too "not in his place") and, to a certain extent, Sainte-Beuve ("a man of spirit [...] invaded by the spirit of the professor and the academic"). Nice copy.
