Jules BARBEY d’AUREVILLY (1808 – 1892)
A married priest. Paris, Achille Faure, 1865. Two volumes in-18 of (3) ff. 307 pp. ; (2) ff. 271 pp. strictly bound in red half-chagrin, spine ribbed and decorated in each box with gilt leaves and fl eurons, untrimmed, gilt heads (H. Burnier). First edition. One of the two first copies on China paper, the only large paper with some Hollande, covered with a fine and elegant period binding. This precious copy in very attractive condition was listed in 1985 in the first sale of the Jacques Guérin library (n° 14), where it was described as unique on this paper. A few years later a second copy appeared, also in a contemporary binding, addressed to the young Henri Houssaye, still unknown, son of the writer Arsène Houssaye (Du Bourg de Bozas sale, 1990, n° 144). Slight foxing in volume I. Minimal light halos in the upper white margin of the first 4 leaves of volume II.
