JOUBERT, Joseph. - Lot 39
JOUBERT, Joseph. Collection of thoughts. Paris, Le Normant printing house, 1838. In-8, green half-chagrin, spine decorated with nerfs, edges jaspées, case (old binding). First edition out of trade. Unique edition of about fifty copies for Chateaubriand, who distributed them himself. The confidential publication, prefaced by Chateaubriand, revealed the stature of a moralist in the wake of La Rochefoucauld or Vauvenargues and gave Joseph Joubert (1754-1824) a fame that he had not sought during his lifetime. The notebooks of the Périgourdin have attracted the attention of critics such as Maurice Blanchot as they reflect a modern questioning on what is writing. Member of Diderot's circle, familiar with the salon of Pauline de Beaumont, whose lover he was supplanted by Chateaubriand, his life was as discreet as his work. Ex-libris D. de Villepin.
