O'NEDDY (Philothée, pseudonyme de Auguste-Marie Dondey). - Lot 50
O'NEDDY (Philothée, pseudonyme de Auguste-Marie Dondey). Feu & Flamme. Paris, Dondey-Dupré, 1833; in-8, red half-maroquin with long grain and corners, smooth spine decorated throughout, pink covers and spine preserved, untrimmed, gilt head (Semet & Plumelle). First edition, printed at 300 copies. The frontispiece is an original etching on Chine appliqué by the painter Célestin Nanteuil (1813-1873). He entered Ingres' studio in 1829 and was the feverish organizer of the first performance of Hernani. He remains the imager of a romanticism without concession. A manifesto of frenetic romanticism. The only poetic collection published during the lifetime of Philotée O'Neddy (1811-1875). Relegated among the "small romantics", he was one of the members of the Petit Cénacle, with Théophile Gautier, Gérard de Nerval and Pétrus Borel. A bitter failure, Feu et flamme was only a flare-up: thirteen copies sold. The foreword advocates the revolution in the art, fustigating in turn the Academy, the political order, "excrement" of the social order, "the brocanteurs of civilization, the magniloquence and the ornaments of religions." (Asselineau, Bibliographie romantique, 1874, p. 200: "This book, in which considerable punch and opium are consumed, is one of the rarest of the romantic series. Ex-libris Albert Natural.
