HUGO (Victor).
Letter addressed to Marie Joly. Hauteville House, February 9 [1863]. Autograph letter signed "Victor Hugo", 2 pages in-8 on blue paper. Beautiful letter addressed to Marie Joly transmitting her the manifesto addressed to the Russian army in defense of Poland. Marie Joly, born Bergmann (died in 1864), was the wife of the director of the Belgian newspaper Le Sancho, Victor Joly (1807-1870), ardent Hugolâtre and fighter against Napoleon "the small". Madam, I have been absent, I arrive, I open the Sancho and I read four charming pages of you; this poet's prose makes me feel welcome in my island; it seems to me that you appear in this Sancho just as I am returning to Guernsey. Since I have this opportunity to write to you, I will take advantage of it to send you something that the Sancho may not be able to publish, but that I want and must communicate to you, especially since there is a very remarkable fact: it is from the Russian army that I received the request for a Polish manifesto addressed to the Russian army. Isn't it strange and significant that a Russian officer should address himself to a French outlaw to defend Poland? Your valiant and dear husband will do what he wants with these few lines [...]. I shake his hand and I place myself, Madame, at the feet of your charming and noble spirit. Victor Hugo.
